1) My Great Grandmother was Lillian Vianna Conner and she married Bailey Bright Reese.

 

2) William S. Conner (DOB 5/1889 in Madison County, NC; DOD ? in ? ) I have not found anything on William S. Conner so I don’t know if he survived into adulthood or who he may have married or when he died. If you notice, he and Minnie Conner were both born in May, 1889. This would indicate that they were twins. On the other hand, there is NO Minnie listed in the 1900 Census so it’s possible that William S. Conner was actually Minnie Conner and there was some kind of confusion on the part of the census taker. Here is the 1900 Census:

3) Minnie Conner (DOB 5/19/1989 in Cincinnati, Ohio; DOD 5/24/1979 in Madison County, NC). In his younger days, Mack Conner attended some kind of political rally at a church. He was a Democrat. He was standing outside the church listening at the window. The speaker said something like, “You’ll never find a man as fine as ________.” Great Great Grandpa Mack yelled “You are looking at such a man now!” He disrupted the meeting and he had to leave so he wouldn’t be arrested for disturbing the peace. They moved to Ohio to avoid being arrested. Their daughter, Minnie Conner, was born in Cincinnati, Ohio. While in Ohio, a woman was murdered and the description of the murderer fit Great Great Grandpa Conner and he was new in the area. One of the witnesses said there was a scar on the murderer’s face and Mack didn’t have a scar. Also the sheriff called back to Marshall and they gave him a good character reference and told him he could come on back home. If it hadn’t been for that scar and his good reputation he could have been hung for a murderer. They moved back home and the rest of their days were spent in Madison County, NC.

James McDean Connor, 90, of 165 Elk Mountain Rd, Asheville, passed away Wednesday, Mary 21, 2007, at his home.

A native of Madison County, he had resided in Buncombe County for most of his life. He retired from Marshall’s Oil Company and, following his retirement, worked with Biltmore Oil Company. He was a member of Elk Mountain Baptist Church and a World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy.

He was the son of the late James Coy and Lillie Baldwin Connor, and was also preceded in death by his son, James McDean “Mike” Connor, Jr.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Lee Connor, of the home; grandson, James McDean “Jamey” Connor III, of Raleigh; granddaughter, Ashley Connor Taylor and husband, Eddie, of Candler; great-granddaughter, Sydney Lyn Connor, of Raleigh; sister, Ethell Lamb, of Hickory; and daughter-in-law, Debi Bell and husband, Lee, of Asheville.

The funeral will be held at 2pm Friday at Anders-Rice Funeral Home, with the Rev. Mike Woodard Officiating.

Burial will be in Elk Mountain Cemetery, with military rites provided by the Buncombe County Veterans Council Volunteer Memorial Team.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Ethell Mary Connor Lamb (sic), 90, of 094 2nd Street N.E., passed away Sunday, December 21, 2008.

A resident of Buncombe County most of her life, she had resided in Hickory for the past 3 1/2 years. Mrs. Lamb retired from NOAA as a Key Punch Operator and was a member of the Church of the Redeemer where she served on the Alter Guild and Vestry.

She was the daughter of the late James Coy and Lillie Mae Baldwin Connor and the wife of the late Arthur Alexander Lamb, Sr.

Surviving are her sons, Arthur A. Lamb Jr. and wife, Kaye L., of North Wilkesboro, and James Lamb and wife, Kathy, of Newton; granddaughters, Elizabeth Lamb-Scronce, of Hickory and Leslie Lamb, of Asheville; sister-in-law, Mary Lee Connor, of Woodfin.

The funeral service will be held 2:30pm Tusdeay at the Church of the Redeemer with Father Hanks officiating.

Burial will follow in Ahselawn Gardens of Memory.

The family will recieve friends from 1:45-2:15pm Tuesday at the church.

Baby Dean died in his sleep while they were visiting Gertie’s sister, Lillian Vianna Conner Reese in Rosman, Transylvania County, NC. My Great Aunt Margaret Alice Reese Young (daughter of Lillian Vianna Conner and Bailey Bright Reese) remembered vividely how Gertie ran down the hall yelling, “Lily, my baby is dead, my baby is dead.” Margaret also remembered how they laid the baby out on a table placed in the hall with nickles over his eyes to keep them closed. She said the baby looked just like a doll. He had a tiny white casket.
